About us

About us

Environ, Eastern India’s only wildlife and environment magazine is published to reach out to wildlife enthusiasts and conservationists in India and educate about nature conservation.

Initiated out of sheer love for wildlife, Environ has traversed more than thirty glorious years. Over the years, its aim has been to ameliorate the bond shared by humans and the natural world. Environ’s publications celebrate the diverse flora and fauna present in India and abroad, proliferate awareness about emerging issues, and give wildlife writers and photographers a platform to share their experiences. Originally targeted at wildlife enthusiasts, Environ now intends to harness the interest of a broader spectrum of enthusiasts and direct it towards more universal issues that presently threaten the world we live in. It aims at making people conscious of the urgent need to conserve wildlife.

Ever since its inception in 1993, Environ has seen a gradual growth rate in terms of its audience. With Mr. Biswajit Roy Chowdhury as its frontman, Environ presently has over 25,000 readers pan-India, and has even forayed internationally. Environ is published quarterly from Kolkata, and is available in major book stores, magazine stands, large format modern retail stores and forest gates of major national parks in the country.

Once a chartered accountant and lawyer, Biswajit Roy Chowdhury left his corporate career to pursue environmental causes. As the Founder of Environ and Nature Environment & Wildlife Society (NEWS), he has led mangrove restoration and alternat livelihood projects in the Sunderbans, authored over 16 books, and contributed to major conservation efforts funded by national and international organisations.

    • Restoration of mangroves in the Sundarbans through afforestation, integrated mangrove-shrimp farming, income generation and community participation.
    • Rehabilitation and protection of tropical mangrove ecosystems  for climate and coastal protection, to conservation of biodiversity and promoting natural livelihoods in India and Sri Lanka.

Environ Celebrates World Wildlife Day 2025

Launch of the campaign  “Save The Tigers” an initiative by Environ at Zoological Garden, Alipore on the occasion of World Wildlife Day, 2025

Flag off Ceremony of a specially curated tour of the Zoological Garden, Alipore for the elderly members of PRONAM and initiative by Kolkata Police .

Mr. Biswajit Roy Chowdhury, Secretary of Nature Environment & Wildlife Society and Editor-in-Chief of Environ, along with Mr. Shiladitya Chaudhury, Governing Body Member of Nature Environment & Wildlife Society and Editor of Environ, commemorated World Wildlife Day by tying tiger-printed hand bands on the wrists of elderly members of PRONAM at the Zoological Garden, Alipore.

Environ celebrated World Wildlife Day on March 03 in 2025. Each year, the day marks the adoption of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) in 1973.

 

At Environ’s celebration in association with Kolkata Police and Alipore Zoological Garden, the event was dedicated to serve as a reminder of the importance of wildlife and the need to Save The Tigers from the threats of habitat loss, poaching, man-animal conflict, and climate change.

 

Associating with Kolkata Police’s ‘Pronam’ at Alipore Zoological Garden

Environ and Alipore Zoological Garden celebrated World Wildlife Day 2025 at the zoo premises with a group of seniors who live by themselves in Kolkata, and are all members of Pronam, Kolkata Police’s outreach programme for senior citizens.

 

Mr. Biswajit Roy Chowdhury, Editor-in-Chief – Environ, Mr. Shiladitya Chaudhury, Editor – Environ, Dr. Piyali Chattopadhyay, Deputy Director – Alipore Zoological Garden and Mr. Shahanshah Mirza, scion of the family of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah who donated his private collection of animals to the zoo when it was formed, were amongst the dignitaries who flagged off the electricity-operated carts carrying the senior citizens.

 

Taking a Pledge to Protect Tigers  

The highlight of the event was the pledge to protect our Royal Bengal Tigers. Environ is committed to foster awareness, involvement, and appreciation of the wild and the conversation of the tiger, India’s national animal and pride of Bengal, is a cause that the publication is passionate about. Placards with ‘Save The Tigers’ and tying tiger print wristbands on one another was part of the act to raise awareness of the rich beauty of the tiger in the forest and how we can collectively work together to ensure that the majestic animal roams wild and free on Earth. 

ROAR: Launch of Environ’s Coffee Table Book as a tribute to 50 Years of Project Tiger

On May 23rd, 2024, ROAR, a stunning coffee table book supported by Environ, showcasing photographs from various tiger reserves across India was released in an august gathering in Kolkata.
The book release event was in the presence of Ms. Melinda Pavek, Consul General, US Consulate, Kolkata. There was a specially curated interactive session with Mr. Sunil Limaye, IFS (Retd), Former Principal Chief Conservator of Forest, Government of Maharashtra, Dr. Pradeep Vyas, IFS (Retd), Former Principal Chief Conservator of Forest, Government of West Bengal, Mr. Shiladitya Chaudhury, Wildlife Enthusiast and Entrepreneur, and Mr. Ketan Sengupta, senior corporate professional, elocutionist and ardent wilderness enthusiast.

Shiladitya Chaudhury, while speaking on the launch, “Over the past five decades, this initiative has not only halted the decline but has also reversed the trend. With an annual growth rate of approximately 6% in the tiger population, India now proudly harbours 75% of the world’s total tiger population. To honour this success, we all have gathered here today.”

ROAR is a creation of tiger enthusiasts Shiladitya Choudhury and Ketan Sengupta, featuring captivating photographs that pay tribute to India’s majestic tigers. The book is a visual journey showcasing the Royal Bengal Tiger in its many moods, making it a gateway to the wilderness for readers.

ROAR priced at INR 3000 was received enthusiastically by photography and tiger lovers sold at 1000 copies in 3 months.

Striped In Love: Photography Exhibition of the Tiger’s Myriad Moods in the Wild

Continuing with Environ’s commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Project Tiger, a unique photography exhibition was held in February 2024 at ITC Royal Bengal in Kolkata by wildlife photographers Biswajit Roy Chowdhury, Shiladitya Chaudhury, and Ketan Sengupta. Joining forces, ITC Hotels and Environ presented ‘Striped In Love’. The exhibition was inaugurated in the presence of dignitaries that included Dr. Andrew Fleming, British Deputy High Commissioner, and Ms. Rowan Ainsworth, Consul General, Australian Consulate. ‘Striped In Love’, the photo exhibition, was a tribute to the enduring legacy of Project Tiger, launched in 1973 to stem the alarming tiger population decline in India. The exhibition afforded visitors a visual journey into the world of tigers, celebrating their grace, power, and significance in our ecosystem. The exhibition was held from February 14 to 16, 2024, at WelcomArt Gallery, ITC Sonar.

Environ and Indian Oil Join Forces on World Tiger Day to Promote Tiger Conservation

To celebrate World Tiger Day on July 29, 2023, Environ in collaboration with Indian Oil, launched a unique initiative through an iconic ‘Tiger Cab’, which saw a Kolkata’s yellow taxi transformed into a tiger-themed vehicle complete with bold and vibrant stripes. It was unveiled at Victoria Memorial with an interesting topical discussion with esteemed dignitaries.
The Tiger Cab was flagged off by esteemed dignitaries, including Mr. KV Ramanamurthy, ED(RS), ERO, IndianOil, Mr. Biswajit Roy Chowdhury, member of the West Bengal Wildlife Board and Secretary of Nature Environment and Wildlife Society, Mr. Shiladitya Chaudhury, acclaimed wildlife photographer and communications consultant; and filmmaker Mr. Arnab Riingo Banerjee.
Over successive days, the ‘Tiger Cab’ zigzagged its way across the streets and avenues of Kolkata with passengers, a lovely reminder of the presence of the iconic animal and its
importance to humankind.

Through the initiative Environ and Indian Oil demonstrated their commitment to the important cause of tiger conservation, the need for protecting tigers’ natural habitats and inspiring a new generation of wildlife enthusiasts and conservationists.
