One of Asia’s Largest Freshwater Terrapins

Batagur baska, commonly known as the Northern River Terrapin, belongs to the family Geoemydidae, a group of freshwater turtles widely distributed across Asia. It is a close cousin of the Southern River terrapin (Batagur affinis). The species was first described by John Edward Gray in 1830.
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has classified Batagur baska as Critically Endangered, indicating an extremely high risk of extinction in the wild. It is also listed under Appendix I of CITES, which prohibits international trade in the species.
Estimates suggest that the global population may consist of fewer than 100 mature individuals in the wild. In many parts of its historical range, the species is considered locally extinct.
This terrapin is among the largest freshwater turtles in Asia and adults can reach a carapace length of up to 60cm and weigh as much as 18kg. The shell is typically smooth and streamlined, adapted for aquatic life in rivers and estuaries. Sexual dimorphism is evident, particularly during the breeding season, when adult males develop striking coloration on the head and neck, often displaying deep dark or jet-black tones with contrasting patterns.
The Northern River terrapin (Batagur baska) represents a critical component of South and Southeast Asia’s riverine and estuarine ecosystems. Once widely distributed across large river systems from India to Southeast Asia, this species has undergone a dramatic decline over the past century due to human pressures. Today, it survives only in fragmented and highly vulnerable populations, primarily in the Sundarban region of India and Bangladesh.
Historically, Batagur baska inhabited large river systems and estuarine environments across India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia. However, due to extensive population decline, its current distribution has shrunk drastically. Today, the species is primarily restricted to the Sundarban delta in India and Bangladesh as mentioned, with only scattered or possibly extinct populations elsewhere. Earlier strongholds, such as the Hooghly River in West Bengal and the Ayeyarwady Delta in Myanmar, have lost their populations almost entirely. Once abundant across vast river systems, today, Batagur baska has been reduced to a handful of individuals surviving in isolated habitats.
The animal prefers tidal rivers, estuaries, and mangrove habitats with sandy banks suitable for nesting. It is primarily aquatic but depends on terrestrial nesting sites, making it vulnerable to habitat disturbance.
The Northern River terrapin is an omnivorous species, feeding on aquatic vegetation, fruits, invertebrates, and small aquatic organisms. Its ecological role includes maintaining the balance of aquatic vegetation and contributing to nutrient cycling in river ecosystems.
The species exhibits seasonal migration between freshwater and brackish habitats, particularly during breeding periods. Nesting typically occurs on sandy riverbanks, where females lay eggs in carefully excavated nests. The eggs are highly vulnerable to predation and human collection.
One notable aspect of its biology is its longevity and slow reproductive rate. Like many turtles, Batagur baska matures late and produces relatively few offsprings that survive to adulthood. This life-history strategy makes the species particularly susceptible to population declines. The decline of Batagur baska is primarily driven by human activities. One of the most significant threats is the overexploitation of eggs and adult turtles. In many regions, turtle eggs are considered a delicacy or are used in traditional practices, leading to unsustainable harvesting.
Habitat destruction is another major factor for the Batagur baska. The clearing of mangrove forests, sand mining, dam constructions, and river modifications have destroyed critical nesting and feeding habitats. Pollution and sedimentation further degrade water quality, affecting the health and survival of the species.
Fishing activities also pose a serious threat. Terrapins are often caught accidentally in fishing nets, particularly with the increasing use of mechanized fishing equipment. Additionally, climate change may exacerbate these challenges by altering river flow patterns, increasing salinity, and affecting nesting success.
Today, the story of Batagur baska is both a warning about biodiversity loss and a hopeful example of conservation intervention.
Conservation Efforts in the Sundarban
Despite the grim situation, there is a glimmer of hope. Across the world, mention-worthy conservation initiatives have been launched to save the Northern River Terrapin from extinction. One of them is the captive breeding and head-starting programme closer home in Sajnekhali, Sundarban. The other one is in Bhawal National Park alongside the Karamjal station in Bangladesh.
In India, the Sundarban Tiger Reserve has played a key role in conservation. A small group of surviving terrapins discovered in 2008 became the foundation for a breeding programme. Hatchlings are raised in controlled environments to increase their chances of survival before being released into the wild.
In January 2022, a significant milestone was achieved when sub-adult terrapins were successfully reintroduced into the wild in the Sundarban. This marked one of the first monitored reintroduction efforts for the species in India.
Bangladesh has also undertaken similar conservation programmes, including the establishment of protected breeding centre and community-based conservation initiatives.
International organizations, such as the ‘Turtle Survival Alliance’, have collaborated with local governments to support these efforts through research, funding, and technical expertise.
While conservation programmes have shown promise, several challenges remain. The extremely small population size poses a risk of inbreeding and reduced genetic diversity. Recent genetic studies highlight the importance of maintaining genetic variability for the long-term survival of the species. Another challenge is the protection of natural habitats. Without addressing habitat degradation and human pressures, reintroduced populations may struggle to survive in the wild.
Community involvement is crucial. In many areas, local communities depend on river resources for their livelihoods. Effective conservation requires balancing ecological goals with socio-economic realities.
The Northern River Terrapin is not only an important part of biodiversity but also a symbol of the health of riverine ecosystems. Its presence indicates a functioning and balanced habitat.
From an ecological perspective, the species contributes to seed dispersal and the maintenance of aquatic vegetation. Its decline reflects broader environmental issues affecting rivers and mangroves.
Culturally, turtles have significance in many South Asian traditions, often associated with longevity and stability. Protecting the Batagur baska can thus also help preserve cultural heritage.

Encouragingly, recent successes in breeding and reintroduction demonstrate that recovery is possible with dedicated effort. Batagur baska, that stands dangerously on the brink of extinction may yet benefit from the conservation projects in progress. The species faces numerous threats, from habitat destruction to overexploitation, but targeted conservation initiatives offer hope. Survival of this remarkable turtle depends on a combination of scientific research, habitat protection, and community engagement. As a flagship species of riverine ecosystems, saving Batagur baska is not only about preserving a single species, but also about safeguarding the ecological integrity of some of the world’s most important wetland habitats.
If ongoing conservation efforts continue and expand, the Northern River Terrapin may yet recover from the brink of extinction and reclaim its place in the rivers of South Asia.
